You can get a nut rake, there are 3 different sizes, if you don't have a lot to pick up. The site is http://thenutwizard.com.
I have been looking into a sweep/chipper. I have 6 trees in front and 2 in back of my house. Lowe's has one for about $500. It's a 190cc Troy bilt chipper/shredder vac and chips sticks up to 2" dia. I plan on doing a little more research on this to see if it will work for me. You can find it at http://www.lowes.com. At this point, I have raked up 10 garbage bags full and have another 8-10 waiting on me. If I can use anything that makes it faster and easier, I'll do it. We had a bumpercrop this year!

Use tongs, or gloves. Black walnuts can stain. If it's too much hassle, see if you can hire some little kids to pick them up for you.

I always tried to pick them up as soon as they fell. They are still green at that point and not so messy. I laid them out on the gravel driveway to remove the husk.
