thats an old question, we asked it in 1969, when the government wanted us to fight in nam. I don;t think we can ever solve that one.

'Seems silly and insane, doesn't it?
Our forefathers recognized government to be not something in existence for its own sake, but for all people, including any youth who could actually use it under the supervision of their folks (conscription used to include those boys as young as 14). So, guns in the hands of the people is to reinsure nothing like what's going on in Myanmar, would happen here. Of course, I don't think they could have had any idea what the ramifications would be concerning our 21st century inner-city gangs and rampant and indiscriminate shootings on our HS and Univ. campuses. But, I'm sure that some counteracting legislation specifically meant for metropolitan areas and any campuses would be expedient. And, I guess if you ask yourself the same question(s) while living in a rural area of this vast country, where hunting is not only popular, but maybe even necessary for sustenance, the law as it is today regarding guns still makes much more sense.
As for ciggies and the ol' fire water, well, I do know that if any state legislature lowered the drinking age back down to 18, as they did in NJ back in the 70's, the car accident injuries and deaths would go sky high again, as it did then (it's now back to 21 in NJ). And, I guess this is the main difference in the law between cigarette and alcohol consumption.
Cabiche?

So I guess all these ages should be raised to 21 (and driving too)? While I agree with you, if it were to change, raising the ages would be more likely for all except the military age. These sorts of laws may well be designed to break down family ties as, with a strong familier relationship, an 18 year old would simply not drink if the family was against it lest he shame the family. We've left the government get into our personal business so we now have to live with it even if we know it is wrong.

Actually in El Paso,Texas where the Army base Ft.Bliss is located at,if you are 18 years old,you can buy alcohol on the base and consume ONLY ON THE BASE because the laws there co-inside with the laws of the neighboring city which is Juarez,Mexico. They share the same laws.

It's not ok!!The law should be raised back to 21 like it used to be for both alcohol and handgun ownership only exception should be alcohol for people under the age of 21 if they are an active military member(if your old enough to fight for this country than your old enough to drink!)I know many 18,19, 20 yr olds
they just don't have the maturity yet to handle
those kinds of responsibilities, that's something that comes with age and experiences, also know many 21,22,23,yr olds that aren't mature yet either but alas we have to draw the line somewhere

I have never understood this element of American society (in fact, there is a lot I don't understand, but I digress). Where I am from you can buy alcohol from 18 onwards.
It seems absurd that you can have a lethal weapon in your home and yet you can't pop to the shop to buy a bottle of beer. Chalk it up to society gone mad.

Maybe because one thing that may trigger a person to kill someone unreasonably is drinking too much alcohol.
A person trained to kill not necessarily must kill.
A person not trained to kill but had too much alcoholic drinks may endanger himself or another person because he is unconscious of what he is doing. A lot of people causes accidents because they got drunk.
There is nothing wrong with drinking alcoholic drinks as long as you drink in moderation and it is controlled.

how does this sound? you just turned 18, your going to go buy a gun and learn how to kill people. you will also be supplied with all the alcohol you can drink just to test your ability to kill the right person when your drunk.

I think a 19 year old in the army is less of a threat to fellow citizens than a drunk 19 year old on a friday night

Because, " the law is an ***". (*** = 3 letter word meaning donkey, famous quotation. I do not understand or approve of being censored in this ridiculous mannor, nothing inflamatory derogatory or obscene). Yahoo, get real, and check a dictionary or a book of quotes).
