A friend confides to you that he has committed a particular crime and you promise never to tell. Discovering that an innocent person has been accused of the crime, you plead with your friend to give himself up. He refuses and reminds you of your promise. What should you do?

In general, under what conditions should promises be broken?

Uh, the illegal conditions! Must I repeat the golden rule AGAIN! If that innocent person was you, would you want a stupid promise to keep you in the electric chair? (metaphorically speaking) It seems your morals and priorities are in conflict...... That guilt feeling is your brain telling you to do the right thing - how long can you live with this?

First off I would never promise not to tell
but hypothetically, I would break my promise, I could live with that! I could not however live with myself knowing that somebody was wrongfully committed of a crime

This is what is known as "crying over spilt milk".

The question asked should be,

"under what conditions should I make a promise?"

Imagine the innocent one to be your mother or partner, now answer your own question.

Turn him in. Obviously he told you because his conscience hurts and that is an unspoken cry for help.

Ask God's forgiveness for being so foolish in giving such a promise in the first place.

do you want to be an accessory to the crime and impede a criminal investigation? that is one promise that affects your life in a way it shouldn't... if this person was really a friend, he/she would not have put you in this predicament!

If I were you, I wouldn't tell. But that's just me, and I am a "play it safe" kind of person. I think the right thing to do though, would be to tell. Sorry, I'm confusing you.
