I was just wondering what happens to the sets of shows after the series ends...shows like golden girls, everybody loves raymond...etc...where the same set is used for years....

Some are destroyed, some are recycled, some are put into storage (All In The Family) and some are put in museums (Cheers).

well a lot of the extrernal shots are from the back lot at Universal Studios.

there's a block of houses used for outside shots.

i'm trying to reemmber what show this was,

but years ago there was a show that was suddendly canceled (might have been family Matters) without really ending it.

IMMEDIATELY the whole set was torn down.
there wasnt even time to talk of restarting it.

Usually, they save them for later. Like the neighborhood set for Desperate Housewives- the Applewhite house on the set was originally used for The Munsters decades ago and scenes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer were shot here regularly.
