HELP! info about - Naval Station (NAVSTA), San Diego?

Question

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how far away Naval Station NAVSTA is from the airport?

Any hotels/motels nearby the military base?

32nd Street Naval Station is about 10 minutes away on a clear freeway...20 or more during rush hour traffic, so it will greatly depend upon when you'll be traveling. The afternoons (after about 2:30) are rough for heading south on the I-5 (which you would be from the airport to the base), but mornings are ok.

On the "dry" side, there is a very nice Navy Lodge just past the entry gate (west side). Otherwise, I would recommend looking for hotels in the southern National City area (east and north are BAD areas), or going north back toward the airport into Downtown or even farther north to Point Loma, Mission Valley or Fashion Valley.

My husband was stationed on both NASNI (North Island) and 32nd for a lot of years, and I've lived in San Diego all my life, so if you need more info, use the email messenger through YA server and I'll try to help you out.

Also, if you're a AAA member, go to an office and get a Visitor's guide for San Diego, as well as some Metro maps....they'll be indispensable.


EDIT: No offense to those who say use Harbor Dr., but if you have ever driven the route in the afternoon, it can take LONGER that way than on the freeway, between the 800 lights you have to go through and NASCO changing shifts at 3pm! Stick to the freeway, please...for your own sanity!

It is about 5 miles south of Lindbergh field. (Lindbergh field is on Harbor Drive.) Take Harbor Drive to 32nd Street, turn right, into the base. Most navy families stay at the navy lodge. If you don't have a military ID try the Holiday Inn National City, It is about 3 blocks from the south gate, and it gets a lot of the military business.

It's about 8 miles. Just stay on Harbor Drive and the Navsta is at the corner of Harbor and 32nd street
