Hmmmm - - - if Mexico has been Conquered then things may have been 'Twilight Zone'different. Though Texans hate me for reminding the World of this fact the brute reality is that Texas fought against Mexico because Mexico would not let them have Slaves. Sotherners salivated at the idea of seizing Cuba imagining all of that sugar 'requiring' slave labor. If America had conquered Mexico then likely there would have no American Civil War because all of Mexico would have been carved up into Slave States thus there might have been no argument over the South being 'unfairly' represented in the Congress and Senate. Though there would still have been argument over Southerner's seizing Negroes in the North, stll the question of spreading slavery into places such as Kansas would have been muted.

Note Defeating a Nation and Seizing their Capital are two different Issues - - - but yes, The US might have been tempted to seize power since the Mexican army was largely destroyed. And America would have stomped out 'Mexican' Culture. Large numbers of Mexicans would have been slaughtered on the pretext of resisting US Authority, WHen one considers current 2007 attitudes toward Mexicans in what many called an enlightened era, it is frightening to think how less enlightened America would have treated a Society largely Catholic and of Mixed White & Natives & (some) Black and Speaking a Foreign Tongue. Under the boot Hills of Southerners, life in Mexico would have been H^ll.

Oh and forget Mexican Food, no Taco Bell, no cute dogs with a name I cannot spell due to dysleixia... And foirget about getting drunk and celebrating Cinco De Maya. No Tequilla either. As stated Mexican culture would have been crushed....

actually that is what was supposed to happen. Congress was enraged when it learned of the peace treaty. The American that signed it was disgraced and never worked in Washington D.C. again. Congress had intended to annex all of Mexico. The problem was America just didn't have a big enough army to occupy all of Mexico at that time. America had won the war before it could gather a bigger army together. Differences might be those from Mexico would speak English today. Mexico would have been broken up into smaller states. America might have 55 or 60 states instead of 50. Mexican Americans would be better accepted If they were citizens from another state and not immigrants.
