Maggie didn't turn into Margret. Margret turned into Maggie, but even stranger... Peggy. I have no idea how.
Elizabeth: Beth -->Bet -->Betty

Richard = Rick which in some way = Dick.
Margaret = Margy = Maggie.
Elezabeth = Beth = Betty.
Robert = Rob= Bob.
I actually think alot of them come about from little children mispronouncing the names. I have seen this happen alot. A small child in the family cannot properly say Travis, so it comes out Travie and therefore Travy. Something like that.

In some languages Elizabeth is pronounced "E-liz-a-bet", dropping the H. With shortened names a "y", "i", or "ie" is slapped on the backend and then you get Betty. Why anyone spells it the way they do is nothing I can control.
How do you get Peg from Margaret? That I don't understand.

They didn't care whether it would make sense or not. They just needed abbreviations because they were too darn lazy to say someone's actual name.
