Just curious because I see everyone saying the Patriots knew what calls the defense was going to make. I'm a huge Pats fan and yeah they deserved to be punished for breaking the rules but the real reason they taped defensive signals seems so trivial. Seems to me a coach with an $8 dollar K-mart watch would have the same effect but that's probably just Bill being arrogant.

People are just condemning the Pats without even knowing what they actually did. They couldn't steal signals even if they wanted to. Take for example the Jets in week 1. They used 3 different people to call the plays and only the Jets know who called the real signals in. What Bill used the tapes for has nothing to do with the guessing the other team's defensive calls.

i think it's blown way out of proportion. i too am a big pats fan and i think that others are jealous of the success they've had in recent years and will do anything to stop that success.
the pats are a very good team and it's not going to help them - they'll continue to win.

Here's the deal. If they were stealing defensive signals during the game then the Patriots coaches could communicate with Tom Brady as to what kind of defense their opponent was running. It provides an unfair advantage. If the Pats videotape a hand signal and match it to the time in the game, the down and distance, then they review what defense was being used in association with that signal (cover 2, blitz, etc.). Later in the game, if the Patriots see the hand signal from the opponents coach again they could communicate with Tom Brady through the headset when they send the play in..."Blue, 24, Oscar.....watch for the blitz" and Brady could audible to a play that would protect against the blitz like keeping the RB in to block or running a quick pass play.

I agree that many other clubs do it (meaning steal signals) but the degree to which the Patriots were doing this with a sideline cameraman in an opponents stadium was just crazy.

Well, everyone does it, but Bill got caught doing it, plain and simple. And, the rest of the team didn't know it was happening, he was using the tapes to come up with a game plan, telling the guys what was going to happen, they just thought he was doing his homework, not cheating. I don't understand how you think taping the opposite team to know what plays they are going to run is trivial, it takes away from the whole skill of football, and gives the cheating team a leg up, which is rather unfair.

EDIT: You misunderstand it was Bill's intention to use the tapes for the NEXT time they play the Jets, not in game 1, that would have been darn near impossible.

I think it's making a mountain out of a molehill. I'm not into Football. I'm a Baseball girl, Whithe Sox all the way. Now if the White Sox figured out a way to decode what pitches are comiing next and what all those hand signals mean, well then they are smart and are using it to their advantage. I don't see the problem. Come on, even though I'm not a Football fan, you don't have to be a genious to figure out that it's been going on for a long long time. The Pats were just the first to be caught at it.

Bill is nothing but an arrogant cheater. Take the Superbowl rings off and turn them in like Marion Jones did. At least she admitted to cheating and did the right thing. Just because you have been cheating for so long and you weren't caught doesn't make it alright.
If I knew what defense was going to run I could go out there and throw TD's all day.Because I know where everyone is supposed to be and what their assignment is. I'm an 34 yr old lineman with bad knees , but you can jus call me Tom Brady...

Much ado about nothing really. Watching the opposing team's signals is all a part of scouting out the other team.

I think they should let the Broke Back Boys to come watch their practice they rest of the week because they would still have no chance at beating them.
