Just make sure it doesn't make your car illegal (if you think about sounding nice then there's a good chance it will violate a noise pollution ordinance).

yes putting an exhaust on an automatic is good - it will improve hp
as far as cost - well that all depends on what you get - just a muffler - cheap - cat back systems are a little more. headers and a high flow cat costs quite a bit.
remember the more you replace the better it will perform and it will sound a bit better to
it's a good idea to look for C.A.R.B. certified or "smog-legal" parts - they need to be C.A.R.B. certified if you live in California but in other states they don't need to be - if you do emissions at a shop - take your car there - they wont do your exhaust in such a way that they can't pass you - if not - all C.A.R.B. certified parts are legal in 50 states and come with paperwork in case the emissions people want to see them

Yes, it is fine to do. Cost depends on a lot of factors. You have to buy a muffler that you like. Then you will have to take it to a muffler/exhaust shop to have it installed. I don't think you will want to replace the piping because you are mostly looking for sound. I would think it would cost anywhere from $150-200 total for the modification.
