I've tried all the things I normally do when it runs (jiggle the handle, make sure the flap is down), but nothing is working. There is a tube that water pours into, and it fills up the back of the toilet. Normally the water stops before it gets to the top of this tube, but now it just keeps getting higher and flows over the top into the tube, and the water runs constantly. Thanks for any help.

Neither of those seem to be my problem. The flap at the bottom closes fine and my toilet does not have a float. Here is a picture of the design of my toilet if that helps.

The washer is gone in ur fill valve.....the thing with the white top on the left of ur tank......water comes into it and then when the water level get a certain height it stops.....since its NOT stopping then the inside washer of that device is bad.....i could tell u how to take it apart and fix it but it will be easier to tell u how to replace it.....go to ur local hardware or wal-mart and buy u a new fill valve....u want to buy the Fluidmaster 400...might be 400a but either way it will be black and grey....turn ur water valve off under the toilet.....then take the supply line loose going from the cutoff valve to the toilet.....then flush the toilet to get most of the water out of the tank or use a shop vac to suck it out if u have one.....then when tank it mostly empty take the nut off the bottom of the valve that is in there now and remove it from the tank.....have the NEW valve ready to go in when u remove the old one....it will come with new bottom nut and supply line nut and a black rubber washer......u wil have to pop the middle of the washer out to slide it on the new valve...but then just put the new valve in the hole and put the bottom nut on it.....then just put ur supply line back on and cut water on to test.....the valve also comes with directions if this is a little much for you to understand before seeing the new valve......good luck man

Nate: you have a small valve in that "tube" your speaking about. This "tube" usually is never seen 'nor head. It never wears out, it's small and, infinitesimal but, when it does go, you have a problem. If you work your float, you'll see how this works that valve inside that tube.
You can take it apart but, I rather doubt you'll find parts for it. It's just as easy to go to Home Depot or Lowes, Ace Hardware, some other store, even Wal-Mart might sell the entire unit to replace this part.
It all comes together, from the water pipe to the float, all one piece. A plumber that will do it will charge about $150.00 plus parts.

There is a device called the float, which rises with the water level. It usually is round and black. The float is what closes the intake valve, once the water reaches a certain level. Sometimes the float rod or the ballcock assembly (which is the mechanism that closes the intake valve) can become corroded and break off or bend, and it may be necessary to replace one of those parts. See the notated illustration below.

The way it looks in the pic, you have the kind that the water level is controlled by the big part in the left hand corner. It should be able to be pushed down an inch or so, then you twist it to lock it in that position. Let it fill and if it still overflows into the pipe, twist it to unlock it and lower it another inch and lock it again. The water should stop about an inch below the top of the overflow pipe.

Okay this might sound a little gross but sounds like your flapper inside your tank hasn't dropped back down. Just lift off the tank lid and see if this round black rubber looking thing is sitting down or is in the 'up' position. Could be your chain has slipped of the bar connected to the handle. If the flapper is still up just push it back down. If chain is lying on the bottom of the tank just find the end of the chain and attached it back on the bar behind the handle. Water will feel cool but it won't be gross. I promise you. Just wash your hands afterward. This should stop the toilet from running.

Check lower in the water....usually made of rubber a stopper on a chain in some brands...make sure its landing on the hole or check for tears or leaks....make sure that tube is attached...you may need to replace the pole assembly connected inside attached to the handle.
