The Russian campaign was a disaster. The French army was decimated by the Russian winter. With no army to field Napoleon was forced to surrender. When he escaped and returned to France the soldiers of France were willing to follow but the best officers were gone. Without good leadership French forces lost several important battles. The last of which was Waterloo where British and Prussian forces united to defeat Napoleon.

French Army was a complete and almost perfect War Machine. Infact it was imitated by all European Army.
Why was it defeated ?
1) Spanish war had started using a lot of economical and human means. Economical means were reduced by sea blockade made by Great Britain fleet. Spain was a sort of "French Vietnam war" a long lasting conflict, with few decisive battle, but a lot of guerrilla. Something new to French..
2) Napoleon concentrated a huge army for invading Russia. He tried to do a sort of "Blitzkrieg" of XIX century. The idea was wrong as him, like Hitler after, didn't consider how huge was Russian space, and how difficult would have been keeping connection with his food and service lines.. One million men army, the best of its army, coming from all Europe, was almost canceled.
3) This Brought both to exhaustion of French resources, and on untrust of allies, and gave trust to old enemies. Austria and Prussia had learned a lot from the past and had organized new armies, more modern, fit to meet in open field french ones and hungry for revenge. In the same time Napoleonic states entered into a crisis and were not able to help actively the main Napoleonic army. Some satellite states even went against France (like Sweden of Bernadotte ).

At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The French and British had fought all day without getting a clear result and the balance was tipped by the Prussians who arrived late to support the British.

Arms should have hands, not feet.

Pretty much Napoleon invaded Russia. It was the same mistake Hitler did a little over a century later. The Russians kept backing up and beckoning them in, stripping their food and supplies as they went, and generally destroying their own country, but forcing France to have hugely long supply lines. Basically, the enormity of Russia and their weather pretty much descimated the French.

It wasn't the FINAL battle, but it was the one that basically gutted Napoleon's forces and revealed his weakness.

Mainly with the help of the British. All of Europe, together, finally rose up against him. France was also running out of money, and if you can't feed your army, then you need a lot of luck trying to get them to fight for you.
