Hi, I have 4 children. It is normal practice not to let a baby have a pillow under 12 months old to help prevent against SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) - My littlest girl is 16 months. She likes to sleep on her tummy. I gave my other children a pillow (a fairly thin one) just before 2 years old.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and she only uses a pillow when she jumps into bed with us. She never uses a pillow anywhere else and hasn't asked for one. I'll ask her tomorrow if she wants a pillow.

we gave our son a pillow when he went to a toddler bed at 2. He never used it though (just threw it on the floor) until he was almost 3.5.

in denmark we give them to them at birth but not the big ones like in the states or for adults...they are very flat but more cushy then just the mattress. Its common here, they are made just for babies of course and never any problems of suffocation. I thought it was odd at first but i have had no problems. There is no way for them to suffocate as flat as they are,.
