solve for y:
-2y = -14
y = -14/-2
y = 7

Substitute 7 into equation to solve for x: 4x + 7 = -5
4x = -12
x = -3

Check answers by putting values for x & y :
(4 times -3)+7=-5
(4 times -3)+(3 times 7)=9

Both values make equations true.
