At least 6 months, lost the tongue thrust reflex, can sit up unassisted, mastered the pincher grasp and shows interest.

All of those milestones, not just 2 or 3... all.

The recommendation is to start solids after your baby is 6 months old. Before that and the digestive tract is not fully developed. The baby's body can make antibodies to protect itself from the food and this will later make the kid allergic to those foods!
First food is usually cereal because it is least likely to cause a reaction.
My 4 month old really wants to eat.. moves her mouth... reaches for my food etc but it is best to wait until the baby is ready developmentally AND physically.

Try to wait until 6 months if you can. Start with really watered down rice cereal first before your start the fruits, etc., one week apart. If your baby is extremely fussy, never satisfied and at least 4 months old, talk to the pediatrician, it might be time to start a little cereal. Don't put the cereal in the bottle. The reason you wait is because a baby's digestive system is not ready for foods before 4 months. Good luck!

Rule of thumb is to wait until they are at least 6 months. When my daughter was almost 6 months we started putting 1 tsp of rice cereal in her bottle, it helped satisfy her belly a little longer. Once she turned 6 months we started the 1st stage solid food. We started out with the veggies first and her absolute fav. was sweet potatoes & squash. You introduce the solids one at a time and wait a week to see if your baby will have any reactions. Our daughter is now almost 10 months and she is on the 2nd stage... her fav. is still sweet potatoes but she loves mac & cheese too. We have started giving her the teething bisgits and all she seems to do with them right now is bang them on her high chair. LOL
Very fun to see their reactions as they try the new food, the facial expressions are the best! Have fun!

I'm sorry. I'm going to get a lot a lot of grief for this. I started giving my daughter rice cereal at two weeks old. She was born large, 8 lbs 11oz, and she was going nuts. She was so hungry all of the time!!! I gave it to her very watered down with formula/juice, and gave a bit of applesauce with it. Suddenly, all her/my problems were solved. No more spitting up, no more waking up every hour at night to eat...she was so much happier. To be honest with you, I cant' tell you how many unhappy babies I have seen whose parents insist on waiting until they are six months old.

you can start to give your child small amounts of gerber or rice cereal when your baby is 4 months old. give little by little. there is nothing wrong with it and it will not mess up their insides. your baby will tell you with small signs when its ready. it will want to feed more and it will just know and so will you.
