2nd biggest genocide after the Holocaust.

But Bush doesn't want to recognize it why? Oh yeah, he's playing politics and trying to win Turkey over for...Iraq. And what are we doing in Iraq again? Oh yeah, trying to be the referree in a Civil War.

So now Bush has spent trillions in debt, let the southern border remain open, gotten us bogged down in a pointless war(trying to Westernize Iraq which is impossible), nearly appointed a liberal to the supreme court, pardoned Libby, letting NAFTA allow countless Mexican trucks into US, and now tried to have Congress NOT acknowledge what happened in Turkey as a genocide.

Wow.

These people were also persecuted and killed because they were Christians. Our Christian brothers and sisters.

Intolerance toward Christianity is not new. Thankfully I think Congress will override Bush.

It's not that he doesn't want to recognize it. Turkey is right now massing troops in the Iraqi border, preparing for a punitive incursion into Kurdistan to fight sepratists, which will throw a monkey wrench into the mess that is Iraq, especially when we consider that Kurdistan is a relatively safe area that we haven't had to worry about until now. I think it's the bad timing. This thing can wait a few months until things calm down with Turkey. I despise Bush, but he's actually right about this one, this couldn't come at a worse time. Congress should table this thing for a few weeks and then pass it, let's sort out the problems with Turkey first before we inflame them against us.

Aside from current politics, if the US recognise the armenian genocide it will bring back the internatinal law issue that US is one of the very few countries in the world that has not ratified the UN Convention against genocide. If the US ever ratified that conventin, the government would probably have to answer to genocide charges from native americans and that would be very expensive for them

So... because of something that happened years before most of us were born... that the people living there TODAY had NO control over (sure, there might be a few oldsters left... but they'd be a minority)... they want to raise a stink. I swear I think the bloody congress is TRYING to create more enemies! The past is the past... it cannot be changed! No, it shouldn't be *forgotten* but neither should it be thrown up in the faces of the decendents of the wrongdoers. The crimes of the fathers DO NOT pass down to their children.

CONGRESS IS LOADED WITH IDIOTS!

It is not that simple. Passing resolutions such as condemning Turkey for genocide of Armenians is a rather mystifying decision, as it is one of those episodes in history that is really impossible to verify, it all depends on whose version of history you read and believe. It is very natural that the Turks would resent such a move by the American Congress, seeing as how hardly anybody in Turkey was even alive then.

Bush simply sees the reality of the situation. Turkey has recently been sending troops into Iraq to fight Kurds, who have been supporting Kurdish rebels in Turkey. Although Turkey is a long-time ally of the U.S., recently it has been distancing itself and this resolution might just be an excuse for kicking American troops out of Turkey, and even launching an invasion into Northern Iraq.

If the U.S. Congress insists on righting past wrongs by condemning other countries, why don't they start at home? I kind of recall that the U.S. practiced slavery, and committed the single worst war crime in history by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki when peace negotiations to end WW11 were about to start, because it wanted to demonstrate its power to Russia. How about some resolutions condemning those things? Nancy Pelosi. Tom Lantos and Mike Honda et. al., where are you when we need you?

Yeah, and he's being so good to Turkey right now. He says they can't cross into Iraq in hot pursuit of PKK terrorists who have killed 13 Turkish soldiers and 12 civilians in the past week.
