um i dont really kno, but it is an interesting question. i kno some of it has to do with species. and some snakes guard their eggs till they hatch, while others dont. maybe it has to do with evolution? idk, but good question! :D hope other ppl who kno the answer, answer this, cuz now i'm cerous.

Retaining the eggs inside the body until they hatch is an adaptation to protecting them while still being able to move around freely. Turtles lay eggs and leave them. Result: many eggs are eaten by predators. Crocodilians guard their nests. That results in less food for the mother during incubation. Sea snakes retain their eggs inside the body. Some sea snakes never come to land. Where would they nest?

Some fish lay eggs, some give live birth. Some reptiles lay eggs, some give live birth. Some mammals lay eggs, some give live birth.

Some sharks lay eggs. Some mammals lay eggs (platypus). And laying eggs is not a requirement to be a reptile.

Some snakes that dont lay eggs hatch the eggs inside of them. The eggs grow inside of the mother then hatch inside of her.
