The hardest thing for a person to do is to think! - Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Thinking is hard, very hard. Consequently, very few people do it. Emotions and 'feelings' are easy; requiring no effort, no self-critique, no thought. Thus, most 'political' discussions are really emotional diatribes, not intelligent discussions.

Hey I don't name call, I just explain why I feel the way I do about an answer. You know for people to take politics as strongly as they do, you would think they would get out and vote for the person they are so in favor of. I bet most don't vote in elections or even have any idea what the candidate they are supporting is for and against. Then if their's gets voted in office when they don't do anything they said they would do, their supporters still support them and usually elect them again. That's why we are in such a mess now both parties don't care, because they know that most people are don't pay any attention to what they do and when they mess up the supporters are to busy making excuses instead of pressuring them to keep their promises. Some Politian’s say well we can't because this one or that one is making it hard. NO KIDDING, if it was that easy we would not have needed or voted them in to begin with. We really need to wake up as a nation, I am conservative, but I do not support Bush anymore. He has not brought both sides together like he said he would and the Democrats that said they would work with the president, well they don't. They just want it their way all the time. Sorry I know that was not really part of your question, I just got on my soap box and could not get off it. Yeah to many people on here name call instead of baking up where they stand and why.

Civil debate doesn't exist anymore accept in some academic institutions. Look at the GOP and Democratic Presidential debates. They're from the same party and they're at each other's throats. It's brutal out there. Politics has become war by other means.

I don't think it's the 'party', but rather the policy defended. The right wing of the GOP has a policy of swift-boating everyone 'not them'. Disagree and you'll be smeared all over right wing talk radio and FOX. The current GOP knows this goes on and approves of it. Many of the right wing think tanks such as Liberty Lobby and the Heritage Foundation publish talking points designed to muddy the waters. Suggest a real discussion about universal HEALTH INSURANCE, and the 'wingers will blast you as a 'liberal', a leftist and even a commie and then distort and misrepresent the issue. On talk radio and FOX they'll say that you're in favor of 'socialized medicine' where the government owns the hospitials and has all doctors on the federal payroll. Suggest that the occupation of Iraq is a loser and suddenly you 'hate the military and want the 'fascist muslims' to 'win'! Consider returning to the 'Fairness Doctrine' and you want to stifle free speech. It's difficult to take such people seriously when they're willing to use propaganda, disinformation, ad hominum, strawman and red herring arguments to avoid serious discussion of the real issues. Yet thes same people will go on and on about abortion, gays, teenage sex and Jesus freak blather....none of which has the weight of this war, the shrinking middle class, diminishing health insurance, job export, pollution, climate change and the slow disinteration of america's social and physical infastructure. I don't think any of what I just posted is a 'low blow'....even many former republicans, the now long gone Eisenhower republicans, are upset in the way the GOP has conducted itself for the past quarter century!

I think when most people first come to YA that is their intention, I know it was mine. But coming from the old message boards I know how mean it can get.
After a while the attacks on every question you ask makes you change and your skin becomes a little thicker.
Remember there are people on here that are just here to troll.
There are still good debates on here and some good people. so all in all, it's worth it.

what fun would that be?
But seriously, I think one reason is that it takes to long to write out a respectful, civil, educated answer, whereas a snarky retort can be done in one sentence easy.
Also, I get the sense that with regard to Politics the questioner already has their mind made up on the issue and isn't going to read more than a sentence of two if your opinion is different than theirs.
And to top it all off, the right-wing, dingbat, neo-con, warmongering, 80-I.Q. morons out here wouldn't know a respectful, civil educated answer if it kicked them in the ...

It depends on the question. If it's a reasonable attempt at discourse,I'll answer in kind.If it's the usual troll bait,I also answer in kind.
I agree with conservatives on illegal immigration for example, and I'll take liberals to task for buying corporate propaganda on this issue. But where i dis agree,I am forceful in defense of my ideals, and,I will admit, insulting when I feel I am being insulted.
Childish,I know, but nothing brings out the mud slinging kid in all of us like politics....

well... it is politics we're discussing...
do you think we should just do away with the thousands of years of tradition of hating, smearing and yelling at those in the other party for no other reason besides they are in the other party?
why... it almost wouldn't be like we were discussing politics anymore if it were civil...
