If I'm so Stupid, I'm noticing a lot of conflicting answers going on here this evening....=) I'm a high school drop out who is trying to obtain her diploma, and in need of some assistance beings it's been so long since I was in school, as well as I never took algebra to begin with, in my days is wasn't required, alrighty....Thanks to you all who are trying to help tonight....

Whoever is saying anything but B is wrong.
Put it this way:
If you owed $282 to a friend then borrowed another $1017
How much would you now owe? $1,299
Your balance sheet would be -$1,299
Answer = B

When you see a negative number minus a number, you'll just add the absolute values of either number together and multiply by negative 1.
For an example of how I'm looking at it -
-1 X (|282| + |1017|) = x
-1 X |1299| = x
x = -1299

you see, think of this as you are already in debt of 1017 dollars (-1017) and you further suffer a loss of 282 (-282). So now you are at -282 - 1017 = -1299 dollars loss!
Mathematically, when a negaive is multiplied by a positive, the results a negative!

Add the two numbers and make the answer negative.
THink of the number line. You are 282 left of 0 to start, and you want to go 1017 further left. How far from 0 are you? The sum of the numbers. And, since you are left of 0, the answer is negative.

The negative and the positive DO NOT CANCEL. You're still subtracting 1017 from -282. That would give you -1299.

The answer is B... because there is a neg out side for the paranesis causing the 1,017 to be neg... so then you would subtract 1,017 form -282 = -1299

no. by subtracting a positive number, it's the same as normal subtraction. since the 282 is negative, and you are subtracting a number from that, you really have -282 - 1017. so the answer is B
