-The pitman arm attaches to the steering gear shaft and acts as a lever, converting torque from the steering gear to mechanical force for movement of the steering linkage.
-The idler arm assists the pitman arm by supporting the steering linkage as it moves in the direction controlled by the steering gear.
- The most common vehicle symptoms associated with a worn pitman arm/Idler arm include play in the steering wheel, wandering, tire edge wear, and loose or erratic steering.

Pitman arm is connected to your steering gear, idler arm is attached to the opposing frame. Together your tie rods, links, etc pivot between the two. If they were to go bad, you would end up with slop in your steering more noticeable at higher speeds. You would end up with excessive tire wear and in an EXTREME case one could snap free and cause an accident. It would probably be very noticeable before something like that would happen though. I would get it checked out by someone familiar with suspensions or a shop.

The Pitman arm connects the steering box to the linkage.
The Idler arm hold the linkage up at the other end.
If either part becomes worn, it would allow plat in your steering linkage and cause tire wear. If vary worn, it will cause steering wander or even a shimmy can show up.
To get your best tire wear, you should replace any worn steering and suspension parts.

The pitman arm is connected to the steering box and the steering linkage. As the pitman arm wears you will notice some play in the steering wheel-more noticable when driving straight. Play in the pitman arm will not wear out tires. The idler arm makes the steering linkage track with the pitman arm, and as it wears, the truck may pull to one side. The idler arm being worn will make the tires wear prematurely.

They both steer the truck. The truck would veer off the road and kill everybody inside.
