Everything you wanted to know about copyrighting and more. Always go to the authority. In this case, it happens to be our government. See the link.

Well Mr. Diaz, I have bad news for you. The Copyright law does not allow names to be covered by copyright protection for the exclusive use of one person. Imagine if one Chinese can have a copyright on the name Zhiang it could trigger a Chinese revolution (The latest DHL commercial says about 10-million Chinese have that name at present).

In fact there had been actual suits filed against corporate brands that use people's names - such as Philip's and Lee. I might take a gigabyte out of this website to recapitulate the excruciating legal ordeal these companies went through to retain their names. It's just not worth it.

However in case of famous celebrities, they can avail of some protection under the law to prevent their names and likeness from being associated with products or advocacies that they don't exactly patronize. However, they cannot claim copyright to the extent of preventing other people from naming their babies or their dogs after these famous celebrities.

What's in a name anyway, Sir? I'm sure you are unique and talented and special in your own right and nobody else is quite like you - even your namesakes. You just have to live with the fact that because of the hotshot name that your parents had given you, a lot of other people would want to have the same name too.

You cannot copyright or make $$$$ selling rights to your name to parents seeking to name their child with the same name. Doesn't work that way.

However, if you're a celeb and you want to lend your image and name as endorsements, you don't need a copyright--just a good PR team and entertainment attorney(s), who can haul in some hefty fees to your bank account(s).

But all that's a pipe dream if you're just an average commoner citizen.

You can't copyright your name. What you need is a Trademark. A Trademark is a word, name, symbol, or device that that is used to distinguish the goods (including entertainment services in the form of a musical act) of one person from goods manufactured or sold by others. The range of things that are capable as serving as Trademarks is great and includes not just words but also such things as drawings and abstract designs, slogans, distinctive features of the product's packaging, and distinctive, non-functional features of the product itself.

utilising somebody elses photos, manufacturers, and names equals to copyright regulation violations... Copyright regulations state that in case you utilize photos or the likeness of anothers sort for "commercial income" or "inner maximum financial income" then you definately could be held responsible. In different words, in case you utilize the photos to get human beings into your internet site or to make some money off of them you're breaking this area.

names are not subject to copyrigth,

If anything trademark protection is what you want.

Start by looking up trademark on wikipedia.org and follow the links you find there.

But your name is not trademarkable anyway just by itself. you will see why if you follw that link!

be careful what you wish for. if you copyright your name, your boss might be inclined to not write it on your (former) paycheck for fear of infringement.
