No. If this were a legitimate site the numbers and your name would not match up in the official file.
I do a lot of online ordering and have never been asked for my SS number - only the credit card number. I frequent sites I deal with all the time and before I give any personal information and credit information, I look for https in the address bar - not just http. The s in https means the site is secure, or encrypted.
I am suspicious of this order and hope you will try to find the item elsewhere. I doubt you will have to give a SS number. Please be careful.

When ordering something, never give out any part of you SSN. What happens is they ask for the last four digits now, then they call up claiming to be your credit card or bank and need you to verify the first 5 digits and date of birth to get a new lower rate card. After they have all that, bend over, because you are going to get it.
If you are ordering on line you must be using a credit card or pay pal. There is no need for a SSN.

What are you ordering that the site would need any part of your social? If you're ordering something that might flag you as a threat (like you're ordering parts frequently used in bomb building) then it might be important to have your correct social. I personally wouldn't go through with an order, though, if the site wanted my social. It could be an identity theft scam. Find your product elsewhere or try ordering it by phone if that's an option. If you can order by phone and they still want your social, ask them why and get all the info about the operator and the company so you're covered if you end up with any weird stuff.

Well if it's a reputable site since they are only asking for the last 4 digits I would say it's OK.

What on earth are you ordering that they need your last 4 and YES YES YES just make them up. No way they could have a database to check it any way.
Crazy. Seems like a scam to me.

They WOULD know because they want to make sure that the credit card you are using has an owner with the same SSN as you....hence needing the last four digits. They do a quick check with the credit card company to make sure that the last 4 THEY have match the last 4 YOU gave. It is to verify your identity. If the last 4 you give doesn't match the last 4 provided by the credit card company, the sale will not go through.
It is for your safety (guard against ID theft, making sure no one stole your card and is using it, etc....). Why would you want to circumvent that?

I've never seen a site that asks for a SS#. If they do that, do NOT order from them.
Set up a PayPal acct. with a credit card and use that acct. That way the site you're ordering from cannot use your information.
(you shouldn't put that stuff on the computer anyway...people suck that stuff off all the time, hacking is a BIG business.)

Yes, you can just make them up, unless they already have them and are using them to validate your identity.
Your Social Security number should only be used with the IRS and the Social Security Administration, or with trusted financial institutions and educational facilities. It should never be an identification number, at school for instance.
There is no reason for TJMax, Nordstroms, JCPenny, etc to need your SSN, unless you are applying for credit.

Theres no need. They ask for the last 4 digets because theres no way anyone would find out your WHOLE social security. I dont think its a good idea to use a false last 4 digets. If you dont mind me asking what site are you ordering stuff one...

Depends on what the numbers are for. If the numbers are just a suggested password for future logins you could make it up, just have to make sure you remember what you made up.
If it is for billing they could compare the last 4 digits to make sure it is a legit purchase.
