I saw the original production many years ago and I can see it like it was yesterday. You can't imagine today what a stir it caused, as no one had seen anything like it at the time. It was revived in a 'concert' version a couple of years ago, with Michael Cerveris and Patti Lupone and won bunches of awards (if that means anything). That production, with the original cast members (minus the 2 leads) will be touring the country this year-if you have a chance to see it, it would be well worth it. And I too can't wait to see what Mr Burton is going to do with Depp and company.

I adore it. It's highly theatrical, the lyrics are of course brilliant, and the music is evocative.
And I've had the good fortune to work on seven productions -- two as music director/conductor, one as orchestra keyboardist, two onstage in the ensemble [doing a lot of featured baritone solo stuff, including the opening line], one as Judge Turpin, and one as Sweeney.
I'm targeting Mrs. Lovett now. :-)
