He reads on 4th grade level, or books that say ages 8-12. He is not a Harry Potter fan. We are trying to get him "hooked" on something. Right now he just wanders around the library picking out nonfiction books on science. I homeschool him and we need some good fiction to read for the fall/winter.

that's a tough one to answer without knowing what the boy is interested in, but if he's into sports you could try Matt Christopher.

History: I'd try the 'Dear America' series, or the Magic tree house series by Mary Pope Osborne.

mysteries: Tom Swift, Franklin Dixon, Hank the cowday by John Erickson.

Sci fi: If you can locate them, Mike Mars or Tom Corbett. Possibly 'Secrets of Droon' by Tony Abbot.

There are many possiblities out there, and it could just be a matter of the science books are what he's interested in at the moment.

I'm a librarian and adults and kids all seem to have cycles of things they want to read and won't even think about anything else.

Good luck.

You could try the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It's set in modern times - the Greek gods & goddesses are still alive & kicking. The main character of the book, Percy Jackson (I think he's about 12 when the series starts). The series starts when Percy finds out he's the son of a Greek god & all the adventures he goes on (and trying not to be killed by some of the other Greek gods). There's some really good humor in the book, too. The books out so far are:
1) The Lightning Thief
2) Sea Monsters
3) Titan's Curse
The author is Rick Riordan. There's a fourth book on the way -probably coming out around May of 2008. Hope he'll give them a chance.

Why not just let him read the science books? You can never learn too much. Here are some books though:

The Hardy Boys series by Franklin W. Dixon

The Wayside School Series

There is a series about a boy, I think his name is Eddie, and one of the books is about an amusement park where they go on a "Hell-a-vator" type ride, I forget the name but they were good.
