Communism is very idealistic. I suppose that as long as there were no grievances or hardships, it could just meander along and work for people.
In reality, though, society has needs which lead toward a system of decision making which will favor one person over another.
The problem with communism is that people within the society must make those decisions. This creates a conflict of interest for the people making the decisions. And, the very act of deciding "one over another" is hypocritical in that system. The larger the community, the more that pure communism will break down.
Thus has been the case throughout history. I believe that Karl Marx even said, "I am not a Marxist" before he died.

I grew up in a communist country and I experienced when I was a kid the deprivations, the propaganda and fear that communism brought to us.
So I remember how "good" was.
Since then I developed a hate of communism and its consequences. Because it is an ideology that can be destructive to a nation in long term. You can change the presidents and be democratic but the mentality of people is harder to change. It needs years, maybe decades.
Communism brought though some positive things as free education, health care and advantages for low class people(factory workers).
This is why after its fall some still were nostalgic.
In balance, it created an economical system that was
unrealistic, fake and eventually collapsed.
The communists violated human rights, exposed the masses to terror of secret services or used forced labor.
Even if they talked about the equality of everybody, a privileged class appeared, based on fidelity to the unique party.

We call Plato's Utopia an impossiblity. But Plato's Utopia is actually based on the Vedic Varnashrama Dharma, which used to be in practice in the days of the Vedas in India. Yet, when it went to the West, people thought it to be an impossiblity, and started using the term Utopia for impossibilities.
Communism ought to have been a proper term for impossibility, rather than Utopia. Maarx had made serious mistakes in his understanding of human, society and his historical necessity. let me list just few.
Marx wrongly thought that man could be happy if material conditions are fulfilled.
Marx wrongly thought that the entire human society could be polarised into two classes, Nourgeoise and the Prolitariates.
Marx wrongly identifies history into different epochs, and predicts that revolution is a historical necessity.
Marx wrongly calles his epochs as Modes of Production.
Marx wrongly identifies all practices with productino pracices.
Marx wrongly presents the idea that Econimic Structure is a sub structure, which determines all spuer structures.
Marx misakenly thnks that man can live without religion and God.
There are many such serious mistakes that had been made by Marx, and marxism is an impractical and imposible situation. People had used this to capture power, but failed put Communism into practice. it makes Zombies out of humans.

Communism only works in a perfect world where no one is greedy, ambitious, jealous, lazy, over zealous, etc. My brother once had his whole family in a commune and talked about how theirs was so perfect because they were all following Jesus and no one was the leader of the group, and so on. Funny how the guy who actually owned the title to the land is now a millionaire after he sold the commune to the city to build a sports arena. The members of the commune got nothing but eviction notices.

There is no reason to dismiss communism on a very small scale, families or small tribes are basically communistic; each according to his or her abilities and each according to his or her needs. In families and small community groups, people IDEALLY take care of one another. However, in a global culture, obviously the idealism of communism lends itself to easily to abuse and seems to have lead, most often, to totalitarianism. Perhaps this will not always be case. Perhaps, one day, we can evolve a proper balance between individualism (which, though much valued here in the west, does tend to lead to alienation and a lack of community values, but stresses and protects individual rights and freedoms) and communal-ism which stresses that the individual should be subservient to the group, the culture, the state (however it can provide a firm identity and sense of community, as well as social safety nets).

I would personally lean more to Socialism, rather than Communism. Communism looks great on paper.. but never really seems to work out successfully to benefit ALL in ALL situations... .. especially on a domestic level.

In the true meaning of the word "comunisum" it means
comunity. Share and share alike.
It was, and still is, a noble idea of government.
To each according to his own abilities, to each
according to his own needs.
What's yours is mine, what's mine is yours.
Simple!
The two Russian political thinkers of the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, Marx and Lenin, developed
this idea of government. It could've, and still can work,
if it is adhered to it's true creed.
Unfortunately, when Josef Stalin became Premier of
Russia in the early 1920's, and Mao in China of the
early 1950's, the idea got corrupted.
What's yours is mine and what's mine IS MINE!!!
They siezed political power and became
TOTALITARIANS!!!!! They both had an army and
the upper class to back them up!!!
They insured their power by taking over the print and
audio media and saturated their subjects to intense
political propoganda and by banning outside political
discourse.
North Korea is still doing this, in the year of our Lord,
2007!!!
If you want to start a commun, please be fair and open.
Do Not take pleasure or advantage of the meek and weak.
Do help others, as well as yourself.
Please, please don't forget the true doctrine of Comunism.
What's yours is mine and what's mine is yours!!!

Pretty much the way I feel about unconditional love. Some people like the way it sounds, but it's pretty stupid when you think about it.
If someone says you should love them, but not expect them to love you..
They are either an idiot, a con-man or a communist.
And more often than not, all three.

The majority of humans are to stupid to make it work, the same go's for democracy. That's why covert and overt dictatorships are the only form of government presently available on earth.
