Sterling silver is not pure silver as most people think. It has a small percentage of other metals to make it harder. It does not have to be marked but usually is because of the perception that it is superior and therefore sells at a higher price. It is very possible, even likely that yours has a silver content too low to be called Sterling ( A quick search said 92% or higher ) Does not mean poor quality.

Most is marked but it is not required. A jeweler should be able to tell you. They have an acid test that they do to test for silver.
