Transmission fluid and oil are two different lubricants used in your vehicles different systems. If you accidentally put transmission fluid in your oil, you will need to have the oil and filter changed as quickly as possible.
Although the two fluids will mix, the different properties of the two will cause major problems. Engine oil is made to lubricate and rid the engine of as much friction as possible. Transmission fluid is made to lubricate as well, however, only to a point. Transmission fluid has a property known as friction modified fluid. Basically, this means is lubricates up to a point at which it maintains friction. Automatic transmissions require friction to operate. Friction in an engine however will tear apart the cylinders as well as overheat the engine. Very bad and expensive outcomes.
It sounds like its not too late for your engine though. I would recommend flushing your oil system before changing the oil and filter immediately. If you know how to change the oil, flushing the system is an easy task, and engine oil flush is available at any local parts store such as Advance Auto Parts. If you're not used to changing it yourself, take the vehicle to a local oil change center and explain that you need the system flushed. If you catch it early enough, you can save the engine and your wallet from expensive repairs.
I hope this helps you understand why you need to address this problem immediately. Good luck.

Actually, transmission fluid in the engine oil is a good thing for a higher mileage vehicle. Up to a point. Most mechanics add a quart of trans fluid about 500 miles before an oil change to help clean the inside of the engine. If you have a low mileage engine, or are not sure how much trans fluid was added, go get the oil changed. If you have a higher mileage engine, and a quart or less was added, drive it a bit, and then go get it changed.

I would drain and flush both the oil and transmission fluid pans. Then put new oil and transmission fluid in the correct pans. Don't drive it around, you can do an oil change very easily and even if you don't know how you can always get someone else to do it for you, but whatever you do don't drive your car.

A quart of transmission oil won't seriously damage the engine. That being said, I would recommend that you take the car to a lube shop and have the oil and filter changed, just in case. The thirty or forty dollars invested in an oil change and filter may well be a small drop in the bucket when you consider the cost of a new engine. Good luck!

well i am sure that it cannot be good for the engine i suggest that you it drained out the old oil/transmission fluid change the filter put in new oil and put on anew oil filter run the engine enough to circulate the oil and change it and the filter again. whatever you do , do not have the engine flushed as it can disturb particles which can plug up the oil pump

your whole engine. this is due to the fact that transmission fluid doesnt have the lubrication property s that regular motor oil does. and it all depends if it was only 1 or two qts, i would be happy. ATF ( auto. trans. fluid) even cleans a bit. but if it was more then that get that engine oil chagned soon
