Keep:
Jeter, Matsui, Posada, Abreu, Wang - build around the core
Rivera (at any cost)
Cano, Cabrera, Hughes - the future of the team
Joba - just keep the gnats away!
... and of course, Joe Torre
Dump:
Damon, Giambi - never wanted them anyway
Pavano - he should return his salary over the last three years
Mussina, Clemens - their careers are over anyway
A-Rod - too expensive, despite his MVP numbers

Yankee Pride: I never said "just get rid of him." I said he's not worth the $30mil he's likely to get.
Alfie: agreed on both counts
Jean: Always the optimist.

I say :
Pitchers to Keep:
Joba Chamberlain
Phil Hughes
Andy Pettitte
Mariano Rivera
Dump the rest
Infielders to Keep:
Wilson Betemit
Robinson Cano
Derek Jeter
Doug Mientkiewicz
Jorge Posada
Jose Molina
Dump the rest
Outfielders to Keep:
Melky Cabrera
Shelley Duncan
Shelley Duncan
Dump the rest
MOST IMPORTANTLY KEEP Joe Torre
The money you free up by getting rid of A Rod, Damon, Cabrea, Giambi if you can, Mike Mussina, and the rest, use that money to get good starting and relief pitchers, not 40 year old has beens, I mean good quality young pitchers, get good defensive players to fill the holes for the postion players you let go, A Rod, Damon etc. Rebuild the team again on quality pitching, defense, and little ball.

Your keep is ok, your "get rid of" is good except for A-Rod. I know the postseason numbers are sub-par but if i'm a yankee fan, I dont wanna see him in a Red Sox or Angels uniform (and I dont kno y people are so convince Boston hates A-Rod so much, they'd love to have him, management just won't say it).
The bottom line is there's WAY TOO MUCH pressure in NYC to win a championship. Young teams like Cleveland can get to the playoffs and be like "well, we're just gonna be aggressive and play our game and see where it takes us", you cant say that in New York and considering how insane Steinbrenner is, you can't say it around him.
That pressure coupled with sub-standard pitching doesn't help either. Every team now has these 20-year olds with 98 mph fastballs and sliders (Detriot, Cleveland, Anahiem, even the Royals for christ sake). We have Joba but after him, we dont have anybody who's stuff is just "electric" as they call it. We have guys that are old and been around the block. People kno the scouting report on Clemens and Moose.

One thing.....
I wanted to get rid of Damon too, but I changed my mind. We do need him. We can use a guy who can steal a base if we really need to. Plus, he's good in the post season and is a great situational hitter.
If Damon could stay healthy, then he's a great addition to the lineup. If he's gonna bat .245 and have injuries, then maybe he should be dumped. There's no way to know how healthy he will be. I'd take the chance though.

they really should keep the entire 25 man roster except clemons who I think will retire. the guys they had led the majors in offense and the young pitchers will only be better next year. this years team could dominate the league for the next 5 years. dont let the first round playoff exit get you down on the team. remember they had the best record in baseball from the all star game till the end of the year. keep this team intact and watch the dynasty return starting in 08.

tehy just need better pitching and something to do with their performance in the playoffs, cuz that was shameful even for a bad team....and im not a yankee fan or anything but it still left me head scratching how the explosive offence shrivled down into a piece of cr@p all of a sudden.
