My friend has this virus on her computer and I haven't quite figured it out yet.. but, she says it takes IE at least 30 minutes to load and she is completely unable to sign onto any instant messangers or her email.

She says she has done a virus scan, but she does not have any way of removing them. Also, it would be best for a free program. [if not, maybe a trial will work as well?]

Would a program like Avast! Virus Cleaner would be okay?

You also want Spybot and HiJackThis! Both are useful pieces of software to have.

Visit Microsoft Update and install the latest updates.

Then download and run AVAST 4 Home Edition Antivirus
http://www.download.com/3000-2239_4-1072...

It's crucial to keep your antivirus software current with the latest updates (usually called definition files) that help the tool identify and remove the latest threats.
In addition, not all antivirus tools are the same; if you find that the one you use isn't working to your satisfaction, you should do some research and try an alternative.

You can run some online (free) scans that will clean as well...

Have your friend run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install any of her current protections before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with BitDefender's Online Scanner
http://www.bitdefender.com/

2. Scan for trojans, adware, cookies, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus.

These scans will take quite a bit of time. The time is necessary to clean-up an infected computer.

Good luck.

I would try www.pandasoftware.com and do the free scan offered. This will tell you the name of the virus and also tell you how to get rid of it.
At the website click on free scan and then just follow directions
