All of a sudden one day the 4th gear (highway gear) on the car poped out of place and when put back into gear it would pop out again when any accel was applied. It would run in fourth gear as long as I would hold the stick down but then eventually it would not run in gear and just grinded. What when wrong and what needs to be done to get it fixed? Thank you!

befor getting a new tranny check all your motor mounts and trans. mounts sometimes these breaks and the tranny hangs down. therfore the linkages dont go all the way like they should, so it tends to pop put of gear.

The linkage needs adjusted so the car remains in gear and dont pop out.
I used to take a tarp strap and hook it around the gear shift lever and hook the outher end to the bottom of the drivers seat. That worked well in some 18 wheelers that i had driven.

YIKES! your gear teeth are too worn. that's bad. thats a tranny rebuild, if you want to use fourth gear. or a new tranny, if the vehicle is too new. sorry for you mate
bad sync usually makes it hard to put into gear - it doesn't usually pop it out of gear. that's been my experience, but hey i'm no tranny mechanic

It really would help to know the make and model, but normally this condition is caused by a bad synchronizer in the transmission.
