As an American who have been in areas where you never see an American flag, seeing one flying again gives a special feeling that you can't describe.
It seems that some of you only focus on aspects about the US that you consider bad. I would argue that for those of you who argue about the US "trying to run the world", there are many countries who envy us and would love for the US to have a reduced presence. Of course, that allows their presence to grow.
How many times in recent history has their something bad happened in the world (Darfur, Bosnia, etc) that countries or even US citizens want to know what the US is going to do to stop it. Notice, they don't ask the UN. Often times, other countries do little to nothing unless the US does so first. People can't want the US to be involved in world affairs part-time. Either the US is to play a leadership role or it's not.
If your opinion is that the US should start shrinking its presence, then you should vote accordingly. Unfortunately, I do not believe any of the candidates in either party take that position.
Voting is the only way that you are going to affect anything. If that fails, there are Americans every year who decide to live in other countries.

Which country of the Americas would that be then? My daughter has a fondness for the Argentinian flag but that always reminds me of the Falklands War. Now let me think... Ah you probably mean the "Star Spangled Banner". I think of Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, MacDonalds, Columbine, Israel, Kent State, Martin Luther King, John and Robert Kennedy, Guantanamo Bay, Microsoft, the NRA, the World Trade Centre and General Incompetence. Their are two songs which sum up my feelings about the good ole USA, both by Randy Newman, a Canadian I believe. "Political Science" and "Rednecks" Any country that can elect second rate movie stars to a position of importance (Ronnie, Arnie?) has no right to preach about the benefits of Democracy.

I think of all the men who died defending her.

I think of the 13 original colonies represented by her red and white stripes, who fought a bloody war to be free.

I think of the 50 united and free states represented by her stars, that stand for 50 separate but united small governments many of which rival whole countries in wealth and size.

I think of the struggles that took place here under her for freeing the slaves, freeing women to vote , freeing legal immigrants to come here and prosper.

I think of the nations around the world that were liberated by men who came together under her waving colours and suffered and died in far away places so others could enjoy the freedom that is the right of all mankind.

I think of my Father lying at Arlington, with old glory draped sorrowfully over his coffin.

I think of my son standing proudly in his uniform as I pinned his Ranger patch on his shoulder.

Weather you are a Liberal, a Conservative, a Democrat , a Republican, an independent a Libertarian it should be held in great regard by everyone who calls them self an American.

I think of this great nation that we have obtained through wars, slaughters, and the loss of others throughout history. Then I think of the endless propoganda driven into our skulls on a daily basis by the government, and their daddy, big time corporation.

I think of how this is a symbol of freedom and equality that for most of America's existence was denied to most of American citizens, as it still is to this very day. I think of patriotism of the fallen soldiers, and the backdrop of the ones fighting overseas now. The backdrop of what they stand for: a corupt semi-corporate/police state nation under god.

I think of a naive population living happy, and under the rule "ignorance is bliss". Happy people dont vote, cause...why??? We have entertainment. We have the PATRIOT act to save us. Guess what folks?? Hitler's first move was abolishing habeas corpus. What do you think the patriot act does???

Thats what our flag stands for.

Agression and invasion of other countries.

Racism and obvious inequalities towards black people.

The biggest contributer to global warming.

Obese un-educated people eating junk food and driving pick ups - 'because they want to'.

Christian right wing extremists who 'hate' for no reason.

A country that still uses gross punishment on it's own citizens as a 'detterent' (gassing, electrocution, lethal injection). Yet US states with no death penalty, have lower rates of murder.

A country that has students shooting each other on campus/schools with firearms, yet no laws are passed limiting firearms.

A country that mudered JFK and allowed 9/11 to happen.

A country that has obvious pro government propaganda on it's national TV (Fox News) to keep Bush in Power.

A country that used the first nuclear weapons and a country that killed millions in vietnam for no reason whatsoever and achieved nothing from it.

A country that always thinks it's 'the best' despite living in a total neo-facist environment with no freedom or abilty to criticise it's own government without being arrested, 'tasered' or called a traitor.

A country that most people in the world laugh at for being ignorant of other races, cultures and ways of life.

I start singing "Oh say can you seeeeeee" in my head and then I wonder what happened since the days when the flag was invented and then I think of what would happen in we added Puerto Rico as a state and what color stripe they would add--red or white-- and then I think that it would be so nice if President Bush was impeached so we could finally wash that big crap stain out of the metaphorically flag of American fiber and well-being that he wipes his *** with every day. Then I think of moving to Canada, but it's too cold and Canadian, so I decide to look at something else instead.
