The March of Dimes recommends that all pregnant women follow these five key steps:

1. Get early & regular pre-natal care. It reduces your risk of having a low birthweight baby.

2. Eat nutritious foods. Make sure that you & your baby get all the protein & nutrients you need through a varied diet.

3. Don't Smoke! Women who smoke increase their chances of having a miscarriage or a low birthweight baby.

4. Don't Take Drugs! Taking drugs, except those approved by a doctor who knows you're pregnant, can cause severe disabilities---or even result in the death of your baby.

5. Don't Drink. Hard liquor, wine or beer can all cause birth defects.

I just thought this was something that you needed to know.

One of my children died because I drank a little wine during my pregnancy, he had a birth defect with his heart.
And I didn't see a doctor until I was 5 months along.

I didn't want this to happen to anyone else.

I had 2 ounce glass of port wine every few weeks because someone said it would build up my red blood cells, it didn't and now the latest reports from the cardiologists all over the world are saying, No to Alcohol during pregnancy.

i completely disagree with Clair r.
there has been NO safe limit set for the amount of alcohol a women can have. drinking once a week is not safe. it may or may not effect your baby. so women drink heavily and nothing happens to their babies, some drink once a week and it effects them. its not safer with food either, thats crap clair! what kind of doc did you go to?

How much wine was a "little wine"? Why do you think he has this defect because of that?

I have been pregnant 7 (also 4 miscarriages) times and none of my practioners throughout the years has banned alcohol 100% of the time. In fact, it is perfectly safe to have a drink along with food every once in a while (meaning once a week or less). Fetal alcohol syndrome results from mothers who are heavy drinkers - 3 or more drinks, 7 days a week.

Thanks for the advice. However, I would seek a second opinion if you are being told that this defect happened as a result of drinking "a little wine".

**** EDIT ****

I realize that what I am saying may "sound" contraversial or something, but you really need to know your stuff to know that what I am saying is true. I have been pregnant 11 times and I have read almost every pregnancy book out there. I have been to tons of different practioners. A common resource that you can consult regarding drinking during pregnancy is, "What to Expect When You Are Expecting". Most pregnant women own this book as it is declared the "Pregnancy Bible". Or just ask your OB or midwife. Or just research it. Alcohol is also very common in tinctures for pregnant women.

When you hear someone or some source say, "It is not safe to drink during pregnancy"..... that just "sounds" right. Heavy to moderate drinking is unsafe for both baby and mommy, not occasional drinking. In fact, the book above mentions that the "safety zone" is less than 7 drinks per week!

I am not a drinker. However, facts are facts. I am just stating a fact. I do not want someone reading this post thinking that drinking is 100% off limits during pregnancy and that an occasional drink will harm their developing fetus. That is just simply not the case.
