first of all, its offside.

it is Law 11 in the Laws of the Game. it keeps the attacking team from having a forward standing at the opponents goal. there are three ways for a player to be ruled offside. One is by "gaining an advantage by being in an offside position". this is done by the attacker being closer to the opponents goal line then the second to last defender (the last is the goalkeeper). and second is "interfering with play". this is done by first, being in an offside position, either trying to, or playing the ball. the third is "interfering with an opponent". this is done by the attacker "distracting" an opponent, either the last defender or the goalkeeper.

there are more ways, but these are the main three main ways to be caught.

the offside law is enforced when the player in an offside position, is ruled to be offside when the ball was last PLAYED OR TOUCHED BY A TEAMMATE (and when one of the three clauses above happen). if the ball DEFLECTS off a defender to the offside player, he is still offside.

Offside is a Law in association football which effectively limits how far forward attacking players may be when involved in play. Simply put, a player cannot gain an advantage by waiting for the ball near the opposing goal with only the goalkeeper between him and the goal (only in the usual situation that the goalkeeper is the last defender).

The offside is perhaps the most complex of the football rules, and people not familiar with the game often have difficulty in understanding it, a situation not improved by recent "clarifications" to the rule.

Offsides is when the offensive team ( with the ball) has a player or players between the last defender (on opposing team) and the goal. the last defender is NOT the goalie.

You can however be onsides when the ball is played and make a run, where you are between the last defender, not including the goalie, and the goal. Once the ball is in the air, you are free to make a run that may be offsides if the ball wasnt in the air.

In addition, you can not be offsides in your defensive half of the field
