The contraction stems from Alcholics Annonymous; but I believe that it is an Association of the family-members of alcholics rather than the addicts themselves.

It doesn't stand for anything. It is an organization for families and friends of alcoholics that stemmed from Alcoholics Anonymous. It is also a 12 step program which were adapted from the 12 steps of AA. It is an international fellowship so members can attend meetings anywhere.
It is NOT Alcoholics Anonymous.

Al-Anon is a self-help group for spouses and other family members of alcoholics they can attend The program reaches out to people affected by another person drinking regardless of whether the alcoholic recognizes his or her problem.
