Actually its not needed...I heard that the light can be stress on the fish's eyes...I wouldn't make it an urgency.

Unless you are buying a specific breed of fish that does not need sunlight (which you probably aren't) you will need some sort of light. However, you do not need an artificial light nessesarily. You can put your fish tank in a place that catches sunlight during the day, and a bit of light at night from whatever light bulbs are on, and that should be ok.
Be warned though, that sunlight makes algea grow very very quickly. If you don't go with an artificial light, be prepared to clean your tank much more often.
Hope that helps!
P.S. Fish, like any other animal, need light in order to survive. Most tropical fish that live in shallower waters (which I'm sure is what you're getting) need light very much.

You don't need to buy a light. Unless you are keeping plants, there is really no reason to provide artificial light to your tank. Fish, like all animals need a day-night cycle to stay healthy, so some light is necessary, but for this, ambient light in the room is more than enough. Just be sure to keep the tank out of direct sunlight to avoid algae growth.

It's my experience that fish can live very long and seemingly content lives beneath artificial light. But I can't imagine it's necessary. I would caution against exposing your tank to too much natural light, however. The algae factor mentioned before is a real one, and the temperature swings caused by sunlight would be the kiss of death.

Yes, you would need light for your tank. If you cannot afford 1 right away, you can place the tank new a bright window but away from direct sunlight, to prevent the water from overheating.
Also you might need to consider geting a heater for the tank, especially you live where it gets really cold.

No you don’t REALLY need it BUT ...
Light plays an important role in the lives of fish. The type of light you use in your tank, however, depends on what type of fish you have. Light also plays a great influence on the maturation of fish as well as their development and metabolism.

I have raised fish my whole life. Yes a light is needed, but only when the sun is going down and at night. If you turn on and off the light as you leave and enter the room, it stresses your fish out. Stress alone can kill your fish.

Well, it is nice to have a light in your fish tank so you can see your fish more clearly, and I personally think it looks better, but no, you don't NEED a tank light.
