The bathroom has a very vintage look. The tub is not attached to the wall but it is close to a wall. I would love to add a shower but I want to keep this bath tub is really very nice.

Vintage bathrooms did not have a shower head that was attached to a riser inside the wall. They used a tub/shower combination that ran on the outside of the wall. Most major faucet manufacturers (Moen, Delta, Kohler, Price Pfister, Grohe) make vintage kits that you can install yourself fairly easily. They use a diverter spout, a supply pipe, and a handheld shower spray. It will fit the look of a vintage bath perfectly since that is what was used at the time.

Ok, well it kind of depends on where the faucet for the bath tub is, but generally there is a place behind the wall in order to get to it in case you have to work on it. Well you're going to have to replace the faucet hardware with one that has a combo tub and shower hardware. This usually entails a long pipe which will go up from the hardware to where the shower will be. Then you will need to drill a a hole in the wall where that long pipe ends; and you will need to install the elbow pipe which will connect to the shower head. Really if you have access to the tub faucet hardware, it shouldn't be a problem, if you don't then you will have to open the wall behind the tub.

It's not cheap, but it can be done. You need to get ahold of a copy of a restoration materials catalog. They should be available on the bookshelves of any good bookstore. They will have fixtures and all the piping and attachments you will need to convert it to a tub/shower. They make an overhead attachment system to hook to the ceiling for the shower curtain that will completely surround the tub and the piping to attach to the existing plumbing of the tub for the shower riser and head. As I said, it won't be cheap, but they really look neat once they're installed and up and running.

You don't need anything "Vintage" at all. Penny's sells the circular or, oval rod that hangs from the ceiling, for your shower curtain. I have one. You can use any type of shower nozzel to fit the wall that will work in the tub and as for the fixtures, go to Home Depot, they have a number of types of faucets for this type of set-up. I just put one in for my daughter.
