In year 0, Sam has 520 books.

How many books does he have in year X?
= Number in year (X-1) + 50 book.
but I do not know how many book he had in year (X-1) so let's find out:

How many books does he have in year (X-1)?
= Number in year (X-2) + 50 book.
but I do not know how many book he had in year (X-2) so let's find out:

[and so on, until]

How many books in year 1?
= number in year 0 (i.e., 520 books) + 50

The recursive part is:
How many books does he have in year X?
50 + "How many books does he have in year X-1?"
