Actually, you may need a BIOS update. When Vista came out, Sony released a bios update which stated the problem of the computer not shutting down properly after installing Vista. The update fixed the problem for me in an instant.

Reformat your drive (backup all important stuff first), then reinstall XP. Vista sucks, it still has way too many bugs.
