oh, definitely go near the state park fishin pier, its north of murrels inlet, very very nice, quiet and empty, its the best. try reservations at the crown reef, or the reef, they are really good hotels,

We frequent Myrtle Beach almost every year and I agree that it is filled to the rim with concrete and resorts but we focus on the North end of Myrtle Beach - (not 'North Myrtle Beach' which is it's own city...)
I am talking about the area from about the 6000 block of North Ocean Blvd and on to the North. Much quieter part of Ocean Blvd and still has many resorts but also has private residences so the beach is MUCH quieter. Don't tend to get the drunk college kids or the young military guys on a break from the nearby bases. They tend to stay much farther south near the roudy center of it all at about 1200 North Ocean Blvd.

At this far north end of the beach, you get more high-end resorts (not to say there aren't reasonably priced rooms available) and more families so it is calmer and quieter. We have stayed at many wonderful resorts in this area - one that I would like to recommend would be the " Island Vista, Myrtle Beach" which is absolutely beautiful. They run a lot of specials with reduced rates and it is a great place for an extended stay because the 'condos/rooms' have full kitchens in them which helps cut down on food costs (grocery stores are very close to the area).
Also if you are going this time of year, it will be pretty reasonable because rates drop at all the resorts after Labor day weekend - that is the end of the High season.
PS : MB is a very easy city to drive around in. Once you understand their basic grid and the street numbering it is very easy to know where you are at.
Good luck and MB is a beautiful place to visit - I hope you have a great time.

Myrtle Beach is paved over & glutted with hi-rises. Murrells Inlet is quieter, set on tidal creeks away from the sea beach. Pawleys Island is laid back, expensive, no oceanfront hotels, people rent whole houses (try Pelican Inn, though!). Garden City Beach is opposite Murrells Inlet and not as crazy as Myrtle Beach.
Litchfield Beach is pleasant if you like the gated community nonsense with scrubbed sidewalks etc. Atlantic Beach (a separate city within the sprawl that is Myrtle Beach) is fun if you like it a little gritty and aren't afraid of black people.
October is a Wonderful time to visit coastal South Carolina.
