Me and 3 other coworkers have experience in energy conservation work and are thinking about starting our own business. The electric regulations/caps in our area are about to be lifted and the cost is going to increase 60% by 2009 the state of maryland says it costs 5grand to make the average home energy effecient. just curious how much the average homeowner would be willing to pay if it ment a 30-50% decrease on there home heating and electric bill, also remember that this can increase the value of your home.

I paid $5,000 for windows in my house to improve energy efficiency. A lot of people told me I paid too much but my bill went from over $300 to under $100. It is a matter of were your priorities are.

If you plan to be in the house 2 years, the energy costs will be $4800. If you save 30 to 50 percent, what would be $1440 to $2400. So you can spend that much if you plan to be there 2 years.

Calculate the amount you will save with each energy improvement, then based on those numbers, calculate the number of years it will take to save enough to pay for them. That is you "Payback" period. If you plan to stay in the house, 10 years is not unreasonable, 5 is better. If you plan to sell soon, figure profit in sale vs. $ put in. For example, if you install windows and insulation at $5000, and it cuts your heating/cooling bill in half, that's $1200/yr savings with payback in a little over 4 years.
