absolutely an excellent year...(that was my choice before I'd seen the rest of the question)......Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Yes' Fragile, etc....

I was thinking 1971 but 1972 is also a good bet.

1972 was the best year....king crimson, genesis, rush, marillion and mike oldfield all those band came out around that same time..

prog rock is the best genre ever

I think '74. King Crimson released both Starless and Bible Black as well as Red, two of their best albums in the early Bruford years, and Hawkwind released their best album, Hall of the Mountain Grill (I don't really think of Hawkwind as prog, but others do, so it's worth mentioning).
