For most of human history, money did not exist. People would trade labor for goods, or they would trade what they raised or made for other goods.
When money was "invented", robbers became a new profession, as it was easy to steal money, much easier than stealing bushels of wheat, for instance!
Nowadays, especially in the U.S., money has gone towards non-existance. E.g., my money is depostied direct to my bank; most of my bills I pay direct and don't see any money. Most of what I buy I pay using credit cards.
In Star Wars, they talk about "credits"; just another form of money.
So, money or credit in some form is necessary "to make the world go around" (other than 'love makes the world go around').

Before there was paper money, there was gold and silver. And for others there was barter "I'll give you this bunch of bananas for 5 avocados."

For a long time salt was treated like money.

During the days of the fiefdoms, serfs paid their taxes to their leader by giving part of what was raised in fruit and veggies.

For many years spices and silk were traded.

In America tho there was money, fur was traded.

Anything that someone has that someone else wants can be used as money and has been.

if there werent money, there wouldnt be a need for something to make the world go around becuase everyone would be dead. People will not work without pay, there would be nothing for us to live by.
