Do hotels really skip over floor 13 and go right to 14 like Mr. Olin mentions in the movie 1408? Or was that something just done for the movie?

Most of the hotels that I have been in DO NOT have a 13th floor. It just goes straight to 14. I always thought that was weird. But I have seen a couple hotels with a 13th floor. Depends where you go......

Yes, they do. They also do not have a room 13. You'll find the same practice in hospitals as well. It's all about superstition because so many people think that 13 is an unlucky number. There are many superstitions but bad luck relating to number 13 is the most common. Check out the website I listed as a source. It has a list of every superstition ever heard of. It is pretty amusing to read.

I think it is the simple fact that people will not book a room on the 13th floor, why would a hotel build a floor they can't rent out? And what the hell kind of scientific proof could possibly prove that bad luck exists?

They really do this.
It started as a supersition, but then it just stucked.
I have only been to one hotel which havent done this.

It is considered unlucky, and plus if one has any guests which are supersitious, they would refuse to sleep on that floor and the hotel would loose lots of money.

Yes they do. There are so many people that are superstitious and would balk at staying on floor 13. They don't seem to care about staying on the 14th even though it is really the 13th floor. I was surprised when I went to Bolivia and visited someone whose condo was on the13th floor.

I'm sure its been done in designing hotels, but I doubt it happens too often. It would likely go against building codes. Fire fighters have to be clear on where they are going in an emergency.
