Well the main difference is continuity, here we know where we are going, where we are, and how we got there. The rules of gravity and reason apply. In dreams these rules and continuity do not always hold up, this is why sometimes we are aware we are dreaming. Of course you could argue that we are now in a non-waking and very intense dream, for it is indeed possible to dream of waking up while still actually being asleep and also time within a dream can cover much more time than it actually has been and sometimes the lack of the rules of reality go unnoticed in dreams. Descartes theories on certainty and the difference between dreams and reality focus mainly on the concepts we know; colours and mathmatics for instance. In some ways there is no real way to prove that we are not just asleep or in some altered state like the Matrix since in a film like that it is presumed that there would be glitches (like the black cat), however this is only true of the dreams we have. It is wholly possible that if we are in a dreamworld, that this state is far more vivid and convincing than the dreams we have at night. Of course this is all hypothetical, in terms of the dreams we have it is the continuity of our lives and the ability to reason and remember what we are doing and how we get from one place to another that are the major differences. Oh and don't trust Descartes, all his arguments are circular and don't hold up under scrutiny.

I do not think that 'descartes"is correct. An ice cream in the dream tastes just like real ice cream. What is the difference? The dream ice cream is an illusion created by your mind.Nothing goes in to your mouth. But the real ice cream and sensation is experienced through" senses" ie,touch, mouth ,tounge etc and not mere illusion of mind.
There are three states, awake, dream and sleep. When you are awake your brain gets information through senses. In dream your subconsious mind is still awake and brain gets stimulation from mind.In sleep mind is not awake.
As regards meditation ,it is cutting of certain activities of mind by concentrating on some thing. Here what you are doing is closing one of the doors of a room, where you are having two doors. The matrix does not link to what is really happening. The dream world disappears when you are awake,it is not continuity of real world. If some dream happens true, mind is projecting something out from many information received and the projection may come true.It can not be callled continuity.Rain is not a continuity to whether forecast.Even if there was no fore cast,it would have rained.
