I kept him in a one gallon, lighted, filtered aquarium that was cleaned once a month. I fed him freeze dried worms nearly every day. His tank's stayed at a temperature between 70-75 degrees. I've kept him that way for about two years. Yesterday, he looked pale and wouldn't eat, and today I found him on the bottom of his tank, dead.
Anyone know what happened so I'll know what to do if another fish of mine does it?

First of all a betta can live up to 8 years with the proper care and right habitat
it sounds like you definately overfed him with freeze dried worms, you're suppose to exchange his diet with pellets and frozen food, and also fast him for a whole day outa the week to prevent constipation
You're also suppose to do a 25% partial waterchange weekly with a gravelsiphon, and not just once a month
And the temperature is suppose to be around 78-82 degrees for a betta really to thrive
So if you'r planning on getting another betta, PLEASE get at least a 2.5 gallon tank with filter and heater
Hope that helps
good luck

It is most likely that you didn't do anything wrong. The average life expectancy for a Betta fish is between 1 1/2 to 3 years. As a fish gets older his immune system dwindles, making him more susceptible to illness. You seem to be pretty good at caring for Betta fish. I would go to the store and pick out a new healthy one and start over. Good luck!

It was most likely just his time. Fish are sensitive to any environmental change so it could have been a number of things. Also, you need to clean the tank out every 2 weeks and just do a partial water change so the beneficial bacteria stays in the tank.
Two years is a long time considering fish can get sick from almost anything and everything.

It sounds like you were doing everything absolutely perfect, except maybe you should have been cleaning the tank every 2 weeks. But don't worry, 2 years is quite impressive.

Same thing happened to mine after almost 2 years. Fish don't live forever, it must have just been his time to go. It sounds like you were taking good care of him.

He was old. Betta usually only live for about 2 years. None of mine had ever made it to 2 years.

it sounds like you did everything right... fish die. 2 years is a long time! that's probably like 96 years old in fish years!!!
get a new pet when you feel you are ready, you are obviously a good pet owner!

sometimes the fish is just ready to die. my fish just did a couple weeks ago, both appearing totally healthy. Plus, two years is a reaaaallly long time.
Count yourself lucky.

You had a Betta for two years... the pet store only gives a 1 year guarantee.. or maybe he drowned.
