If you've ever been to one, were they helpful? I know it depends on the psychologist but... I think it would be a good idea for me to see one, but right now I'm short on money.

If your Psychologist is not working out for you, that does not by any means indicate that all Psychologists are worth it. I would go to another Psychologist but before choosing the next Psychologist I would do my research about him/her. What his/her specialty is, what people say about him/her, I would try to talk a little to him/her on the phone and see how and if we click. Dp mpt expect them to work miracles though. They are psychologists and even doctors who help physically sick people need the patient to cooperate. Psychological illness is way more complicated than physical illness and needs a lot of will and cooperation on the part of the person seeking help

No to the first question, they ain't.

Been going to one for the last 3 years and even tho I have had some hard times- they really put it to you and it pays to be honest and open to recovery.

Most will work on a sliding scale, if you explain about your situation.

And if you really can't afford it, try talking to your GP. They can help you apply to get a free clinic therapist.

Good luck and good health :)

It really does help. I saw one for PTSD because of 9/11. I stayed once I was feeling better about it because there were other things that came out that I didn't even know bothered me.
I was in therapy for about a year and a half & I can say it really does help.
If for nothing else than to get a new perspective on situations & to learn how to handle them better.
My Dr. told me that I can come back anytime I want to talk. Sometimes that is the best way, to just talk it out.
The Department of health may be able to get yo into a free program. Call them to find out.

Try talking to a good friend, guidance counselor, or pastor. It's cheaper & they may actually care what happens to you.

I've known a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists, and in my opinion, they are the ones who are in most need of help.

Tonites episode of Criminal Minds was actually about that.
