Assuming only Wal-mart was affected, other retailers would issue new shares on the New York stock exchange, and expand rapidly to take their place.

Well many who hate walmart would rejoice and praise god or something. Otherwise it would cost a lot of unemployment and people would be forced to shop at alternatives which could actually stimulate the economy, also the chinese would be very pissed if walmart shut down (they make over half the junk walmart sells).

everthing would cost more somewhere else. i know they supposedly hurt the economy, but i have more of my money left after shopping there. i can afford to have the neighbors boy cut my grass. without places like wal-mart i would not be able to do that. this really helps his finances.

The only "major catastrophe" that could do that is to have Hillery win in 2008.

China would pee it's collective pants, and then start cashing all those bonds they hold over us. Then we'd be screwed. The government would be broke, start printing money as fast as the presses could spin, and inflation would shoot up to insane levels.

In the short term, higher unemployment, higher wages, higher prices for goods, and a weakened real estate market. In the long run, higher employment, stronger unions, higher prices, and a stronger real estate market due to higher employment and higher wages.

Perhaps a recession...everyone would pay more since Walmart has the efficiency thing down to a science!
