Eris was the Goddess of Discord. The gods were having a party, but did not invite her, on the account of her portfolio

Nevertheless, she heard of the party and went to spite the gods. She gave a golden apple to Zeus, exclaiming that it was for the most beautiful goddess. Immediately, Athena, Aphrodite and Hera went forward to claim the prize.

Zeus, trying to be impartial, announced that he will let a mortal decide the winner of the coveted prize. He chose Paris, a prince of Troy to be the judge.

Each of the three goddess, tried to bribe Paris, into giving the prize to herself.
Athena promised wisdom, Hera promised him power while Aphrodite promised him Love.

Paris, eventually gave Aphrodite the apple, on the account that he had seen Helen, wife of Menelaus, who was the brother of Agaemmenon, leader of the Greeks.

Helen, prior to marriage, was also hotly contested among the Greeks. It was also decided, that the husband of Helen could ask anything from the leaders.

Hence, when Helen was spirited away to Paris by Aphrodite, the Greeks took up arms to take back Helen

Eris rolled the Golden Apple to award to the most beautiful Goddesses into the meeting of the Gods and Goddesses to cause trouble. Then things went awry when Paris was picked to make the choice and Aphrodite cast a Love spell on a married woman.

If the Trojan war was caused by anyone, it was Aphrodite. Athena then took the Greeks under her care for the war and Aphrodite helped the Trojans.

Apple of Discord, a golden apple inscribed Kallisti – "For the most beautiful one", or "To the Fairest One" – provoking the goddesses to begin quarreling about the appropriate recipient. The hapless Paris, Prince of Troy, was appointed to select the most beautiful by Zeus. Each of the three goddesses immediately attempted to bribe Paris to choose her. Hera offered political power; Athena promised skill in battle; and Aphrodite tempted him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. While Greek culture placed a greater emphasis on prowess and power, Paris chose to award the apple to Aphrodite and the famous Trojan War followed after.
