In the actual city.

WalMart tried to get a SF store, but it fell through (I do not recall the details). There is a WalMart in Oakland and a Target in Colma (only 9 miles from SF). In the Bay Area, some of the locals think 9 mi is far but in the midwest and south a lot of ppl drive that far for a grocery store. There is a Costco south of market (but they only sell food).

San Francisco does not have the square footage for that large a commercial space. Furthermore, there are strict historic architectural and zoning guidelines which would prohibit a monster store like that, thank goodness. San Francisco would not be San Francisco if it allowed a thing like that to exist. You can go across to the East Bay somewhere and find one. We dont want an ugly store with cheap Chinese merchandise. San Francisco has a unique look which is why it is the #1 tourist destination. A Walmart would certainly ruin the city even if there were room for it. No thanks. There has been enough damage done to San Francisco neighborhoods during the 1970s. It doesnt even resemble the real San Francisco any more. Please note: Pleasanton and Livermore are not near San Francisco as someone wrote.

No Wal Mart in SF.
The closest one on the peninsula side is Mountain View or you can cross the bridge and go to Oakland or San Leandro or Union City. Those are all more than 30 min away.

No, none... thank god. They tried to set up shop here, but neighborhood organizations stopped them (partially by demanding that if they DO come here, they have to pay employees a living wage, which in SF, is way more than Walmart is willing to pay).
