The US has always had a negative look at communist and communist countries. Watch the movie "Reds" if you don't believe me. The US UK France and Poland all had bad relations with Russia at the time before the war. The Russian Czar was cousins to English monarchy, and Poland and Russia where at constant war over disputed borders. When Hitler invades and occupies Poland he made a non aggression pact with Stalin and Russia. But Hitlers desire for for oil and industrial capabilities deep in Russian territories made him invade. Then all faced with a common foe Russia joins the UK to stop Hitler. The wests problems with Russia occurred when they refused to leave lands they occupied after the war was over. Then when US intelligence finds out that the Russian stole the plans to the Atomic bomb.
China was an US ally till Chairman Mao Tse Tung took control , of China during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The US sent aid to non communist forces in China but did too little to late. Angering Mao even more.

The Russians really weren't until the Nazis attacked them in 1941. We didn't even recognize the Soviet government until 1933. We were allies against the Germans during WW II and then afterwards were enemies in the Cold War. China was taken over by a communist government in1949 and we have not been friends since.

Beware of Cold War disinformation, like the answers given here. China NEVER invaded Korea, Taiwan, or Vietnam. "Our" leaders were content to live with Fascism, but they tried to scare us (and they still try to) when any country chooses a socialist government.
As for Russia, the Western powers even tried to stop Russia's revolution in 1918. In China (and Vietnam), "our" leaders pulled a bait and switch tactic, which earned them them the enmity of our WWII friends.

They were our allies, but not friends. We were never friends with communist Russia. Ever hear of the saying....
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
During World War 2, we were allies only with Russia. As for China, we were friends with them until the godless Communists took over killing millions in the process.
And why did you assume our leaders changed the friendship? The way you asked your question gives a strong impression of that our leaders were at fault. It takes 2 to argue.

nicely the following is the base line. Stuff is being tacked onto this bill which will impact you even moreso than earlier. purely look on the amendments and also you may see. this isn't some altruistic bill. Its in there to make someone wealthy on the price of the taxpayers. Write your representatives and purely say "no" to Cap and commerce.

Russia was never anyones friends. We had been on the outs with Russia forever. The Chinese changed it with their strict adherence to COmmunism. Our leaders changed nothing. The others, after they sucked us dry of foreign aid, changed.

The Russians were not liked by most western governments before WW2 and the Chinese were merely exploited.
