Other than buying distilled water or having a reverse osmosis system, i think the only other way is to get the aquarium conditioner from the pet store.

There are no simple remedies to remove all the additives found in tap water. You can leave water out overnight and chlorine will dissipate, but many treatmen plants now add chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) to water and that does not easily dissipate from water. The safest route is to buy a chemical dechlorinator. Make sure that the product you choose removes or neutralizes both chlorine AND chloramine.

Salt does not remove the chlorine in the tap water. Sorry. Only way to purify the water is with water conditioner or bottled or filtered waters.

Well, there is no reason really to purify water for your fish. If you gave a reason why you should do it. It might be different though.

Boil it then cool to room temp, or add about 1/8 tsp per gallon of Baking soda (NOT baking powder!).

salt should work, its a natural anti=bacteria but, the real thing from the fish shop is the best
